Awareness is the Best Defense

Also, 80% of the time your attacker is someone you know and trust. Women need She-Defense at work, home, and school, and not just against strangers. I was never fully bullied until after I graduated from high school and was out on my own.

Included in the awareness side is to be in tune with your surroundings and abilities. Tapping into your intuition and understanding body language (both your own and others’) can be useful tools. Notice what situations make your heart rate increase. Trust your ability to recognize when you feel uncomfortable, and learn to excuse and extract yourself from those situations.

As a woman, I understand the seriousness of needing protection from the outside world, especially after I was thrown into the midst of a masculine dominated society. In their dealings with men, women need to consider far more than protecting themselves from physical attack. Women also need protection from the perpetuation of centuries-old suppressing male mentality.

Strategies of Physical Defense

mr31In She-Defense, the ideal option is to get away from your attacker. If you cannot do that, you reduce your opponent’s strength by eliminating the space between the two of you. You literally hug your opponent, which is the opposite of what you might expect. Pushing away from someone who is stronger than you will only weaken you. Once you’re snug against your opponent, you use leverage against him (or her), rather than punching him with mini knuckles. Most women cannot match the strength of most men.

Unfortunately, many self-defense programs place a woman directly in line with a man’s strength by keeping the wrong amount of space between them, giving the stronger opponent the advantage. In karate, boxing, and kickboxing, women are often taught to follow the wrong set of rules and adopt the wrong mindset. The last thing women need to learn is to fight like a man. Many attacks don’t even start when you’re standing and can come from behind you or even when you’re sitting.

The martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) provided a way for me to physically defend my delicate self, which I had never considered possible. BJJ gives the smaller person the advantage by using the size and strength of the stronger opponent against him or her. The reality is, if a woman is attacked and if she doesn’t get in that first lucky punch, she will most likely will end up on the ground—or worse, in a car trunk.

Women Require Women 

mr19Most self-defense programs are taught from a man’s point of view that normally focus on attacks that come from strangers, in a stand-up, face-to-face interaction. They also don’t address the sticky situations that young women are faced with on a regular basis. Can a man tell a woman what it felt like after her former boyfriend used her body, affection, emotions and time? Or how it feels to handle a male boss that’s acting inappropriate and jeopardizing her stability and/or career? Or how she can gain security or honor from the suppression of man-made media and political system? Or how are boys or men going to start treating her differently once she starts to menstruate?

Women have their own situations and problems that men do not know how to address, period. Therefore, when it comes to women’s emotional world, a man cannot serve as a guide. Women are much too complicated, and the last thing women need is men directing them in their emotional world or stifling their intuition. The fact is many men desperately need to learn to respect the sugar and spice and all that is nice. Women need to accept and help each other understand that we do have different experiences that need to be expressed, learn about and taught.

Women need to look to each other for guidance regardless of our appearance, age, culture or status:
